While modern medicine has cures for many Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), herpes is different. Its unique nature can cause significant stress for patients. It is important to understand the disease, how it's treated, and how to manage it for life.

The Nature of the Virus
A Lifelong Infection: Unlike curable STDs like chlamydia, herpes cannot be cured. Once the infection is acquired, the virus "sits in your spine," meaning the individual carries it for life and can always transmit it.
The Repeat Outbreak Factor: The reason herpes is so "annoying" and dreaded is its tendency to cause repeat outbreaks. These flares can occur during periods of low immunity or fever.
Treatment Modes: Managing the OutbreaksBecause there is no cure, the goal of treatment is effective management of outbreaks and symptoms. The three primary modes of treatment are:
Observational (Do Nothing): An outbreak will eventually resolve itself over time, whether treated or not.
Episodic Treatment: This involves taking medication when an outbreak occurs. The medicine immediately stops the replication process of the viruses, allowing the patient to heal quickly.
Suppressive Treatment: This is typically reserved for patients who experience frequent, repeated outbreaks. It involves taking continuous medication for an extended period (like three or six months) to keep the outbreaks at bay.
